Practice Writing about Photography:
What is happening in this image?
At first glance we see a mirror but on closer inspection, it's just a frame that is placed to make the image appear different. It is a group of young boys playing in the streets with one of them riding through the frame on a bike. Why has the photographer stopped to make an image? It is a moment that represents all that it is to have fun, it looks strange but intresting so there is no reason not to take the image. How would you describe the composition of this photograph? To put it simply it is a moment of Chaos, outside the norm of what usually happens on this street. Try to describe how this photographer was able to make an image like this? This photographer created this photo by instincly taking a photo of something that looked strange or interesting, which requires a an ablilty to be able to read what might happen in a situation. How might s/he work on a daily basis? By taking photographs of intresting moments seen consistently around the city. What kind of camera might s/he have used? It was most likely a film camera How does this image make you feel? Personally this image does not speak much to me, therefore it is difficult to describe how it would make me feel. However, it does hold some sort of noltalgia of a time where it was acceptable to do stupid things in the middle of the street with the only judgement being that "it is because they are children". |
Blacklight (Keld Helmer - Petersen):
Aïcha Fall
Fall created a project using the people and objects around her, this is to illustrate "the mechanics of a gesture" that can create another reality through the use of photographs to create a story. She narrates her story by the use of the black body as a vehicle to show that these bodies are able to do wonders, or simply existing "simply" and "beautifully".
In my personal opinion, I think that her work is quite interesting simply because of the fact that all of the photos are taken at home in a studio made out of her fathers garage. She uses colourful cloth and other assortments of items available to her to create this intricate set of images of the black figure in different positions, either covered or doing some strange things with their bodies. |
Festival in a box:
During Covid-19 the photoworks festival was unavailable to be done in person, to combat this the festival was delivered in the form of a box which came with a list of all the artist that would be displayed and in the contents of their works which we would have the chance to curate. This is what my class and myself did before the half term started.
In Curating one must be vigilant and persevere as there were many disagreements about where each artists work should go so that they may be displayed in equal fashion which was by far the most difficult challenge. We had decided that the best action we could do was to split into pairs and handle an artist each which worked in the long run as it split the work load and allowed us all to finish quickly however, this came with the drawback that there were many disagreements of location and space allocated to each artist but ultimately we mostly came to an agreement. My role in this was to firstly put the piece of work onto the shelf and decide where to put the description. This was done quickly since it was the first to be put up and it was done as a group effort between me and a few others. I then moved onto the far right section of the wall where myself and another person displayed the darker photographs.
